Diatoms

A variation on the "Bijou" series. The starting point of the diatoms are drawings by Ernst Haeckel. Diatoms are a phylum of single-celled algae with a gravel exoskeleton. The tribe has approximately 10,000 species, which vary in size from 10 to 100 micrometers. As producers, they are at the beginning of the food chain and provide about half of the primary production in the oceans.
