Assignment "Fabric"
On November 20, the artwork "fabric was presented to Kees Vendrik, chairman of the National Climate Platform, at the DeTopvanOnderop.
I was asked for this assignment by de top-van-onderop. This concerns an assignment for two works of art to be awarded, the second will be awarded in December to someone whose name I will announce later. After looking at the websites of the various organizations, I saw the important similarity was the social fabric that is necessary to achieve something.
An association with a phenomenon in the nature surrounding us came to mind, where we don't often look and about which there is still a lot to be discovered. We do see the outcome in the form of a plant. Underground, a plant works together with fungi through its roots, this is called mycorrhiza. This collaboration leads to a healthy growing plant. A lot of work is first done underground to guarantee the delicate beginnings above ground and the subsequent development. A nice picture in the light of what these organizations are doing.
The work is made from remnants of passe partout cardboard and thread. The cardboard is laser cut and laser engraved. The fluffy, fragile beading thread runs through it like a moving interplay of lines. When unfolded at 360 degrees, the carousel has the shape of a stylized sun. Each opened page gives a different picture of the flow through the work. The object is ambiguous and can be viewed from multiple sides.
Also good to know:
“Environment and climate Globally, at least five billion tons of carbon dioxide are stored in mycorrhizal networks each year, an amount roughly equivalent to the amount of carbon dioxide emitted annually by the United States. According to scientific organizations, the importance of these fungi is underestimated in the climate discussion.”

Completing the assignment would not have been possible without the help of the people from Fablab Groningen.
