Art on the cutting edge...
bijou
The “Bijou” series, layered burnt paper objects, is based on crocheted, bobbin laced rugs from the past, a vanished world. Women were also expected not to sit still during their free hours, which could mean, for example, that they were not allowed to read a book, but manual labor was fine. Even if it was an 'unnecessary' luxury product such as lace dresses. “A woman's hand and a horse's tooth never stand still.” What a special comparison! The makers were of course the best at counting and foresight.
An early version of the series “Bijou” was previously presented by "Huntenkunst.” In the meantime, the series has expanded/grown with various other motifs, among others based on the drawings of Ernst Haeckel. His book "Kunstformen der Natur (published from 1899) was a sensation. Haeckel’s drawings were transformed into (crochet) patterns. The Art Deco and Jugendstil periods were influenced by his work.
