Art on the cutting edge...
About “Bijou revisited”
The series “Bijou” consists of 3D objects inspired by the crocheted, bobbin-laced doilies of yesteryear, a vanished world. Even in their free time, women were expected not to sit idle, which could, for example, mean that reading a book was not allowed, but patient handwork was fine. In fact, they are a reflection of frozen time. A saying from that era: “A woman’s hand and a horse’s tooth never stand still.” What a peculiar comparison! The creators, of course, were highly skilled at counting and planning ahead.
An early version of the series “Bijou” was previously presented by "Huntenkunst.” In the meantime, the series has expanded/grown with various other motifs, among others based on the drawings of Ernst Haeckel. His book "Kunstformen der Natur (published from 1899) was a sensation. Haeckel’s drawings were transformed into (crochet) patterns. The Art Deco and Jugendstil periods were influenced by his work.
The expanded series is now called “Bijou revisited.”

The objects are made using a relatively new technique, where the motif is laser-cut from paper, and I explore the limits of what is still possible. I assemble the work from the laser-cut pieces. Chance plays a role in my work. How an artwork or installation connects with an interior is very important to me. My installations always arise in conjunction with the existing interior. During the art event 'Manifesta' in Gorkum and in the building of the Laude natural burial site, I created an installation with the 'Bijou revisited.'
The works from the series 'Bijou revisited' are for sale.
