Paper from tipping point to possibility
Exhibition in 2025 at the church of Goldjebloum in Assen.
In the church of Goldjebloum in Assen, I created the installation Naturfreude on the choir wall with hand-cut paper images. The idea is to temporarily bring images back into the church. My first installation in the church of Adorp in 2009 had the same theme and was a turning point for me. Hand-cut paper forms temporarily brought images back into the church, where there were once murals before the iconoclastic fury (1566). Since then, I have created various paper installations, often in a historical setting with (usually) a contemporary theme. The hand-cut paper works in the installation in the church of Goldjebloum were made between 2000 and around 2010. They were part of other installations or material cut to be incorporated into my paintings. The reunion with these hand-cut works surprised me. I have revisited them, and they might once again play a role in my future exhibitions.
A church offers the viewer a different perspective than a dining room or a billiard room. Each time, a new story emerges. But with the same theme: my deep concern in how we as humans interact with nature. At the same time, my greatest motivation to make art. The religion in this installation is portrayed sparsely; an eclectic interplay of flowers, plants, birds, and abstract forms takes center stage. No humans are visible, or are they? Somewhere in this overwhelming world, one floats. Has religion been transformed into something else/something earlier? The visitor can create their own story, the work provides the ingredients.
The installation "Naturfreude" was was specially developed for the wall in the church of Goldjebloum, and a selection of my work was on display.
